Solo - entrepreneurs: Ask for help!

As a entrepreneur it's easy to get caught up in wanting to do everything yourself.
But in order to achieve success you have to let some things go and hire an
expert. Math is not my thing, so I hired an accountant:) HOWEVER, I do make
sure I understand the basics and how my profits and expenses are allocated.
Become a master of your strengths and delegate the rest.

Blogging 101 best practices to get started

I wanted to share my notes from today's - SBA's Blogging 101 Webinar.

  • 60% of businesses have blogs.
  • Most bloggers post once a month.
  • Blogging helps increase SEO (Search engine optimization). Keep your content fresh.
  • Can't think of a topic, invite guest bloggers.
  • Find an editor to help proofread before you post (this could simply be someone you know who is good at writing and editing).
  • Before you post 3rd party content, thoroughly read and research
  • Before you decide on your blog make sure you set a goal: Increase readership, awareness, sales?
  • Provide valuable content and not hard sales
  • Decide who your reader is and write in a way that is relatable.
  • How will you mange your time? Third parties like Hootsuite help you manage your social media pages. Schedule certain days and times to post.
  • Provide updated information on the industry you are interested in.
  • Write posts using 300-500 words.
  • You can also post fillers: links, Youtube videos, inspirational quotes, resources, etc in between your main posts.
  • Can't think of anything to write about, invite a guest blogger.
  • Post how to's or tutorials.
  • Get permission before you post information or pictures about someone.
  • Create attractive headlines. Think about what people would type in the search engine.
  • Be yourself! Drop the corporate language and speak in your readers' terms.
  • Use links, videos, images, white space. Make sure images and videos are copyright free.

Special thanks to Aaron Strout, Caron Beesley and Simon Salt for providing this valuable blogging webinar!

Tall wo(men) make more MONEY!

I saw this in one my business books and had to post.Tall people because they are seen as more leader-like—actually earn higher performance evaluations and also earn more money. In fact, each inch in height amounted to $789 more a year in pay. So, someone who is 7 inches taller—say, 6 feet versus 5 feet 5 inches—would be expected to earn $5,525 more annually. - I guess I need to wear heels more often! Read more

Does your company support maternity leave?

Two months ago Yahoo's CEO Marissa Mayer banned telecommuting and created quite the uproar, especially for working mothers with young children. She recently implemented a new maternity policy, for both mommies and daddies to take up to eight weeks of paid child leave, with benefits, each time they have a new child. New mommies are also entitled to an additional eight weeks of paid leave after pregnancy. Having a new baby is stressful enough, not having the added stress of financial burden helps so many families, physically and mentally. Does your company support new mommies and expanding families?
